Iconic Kota Kinabalu Building Displays Unique Ethnic Representation
Adorned with Sabah’s three ethnic elements of Kadazandusun, Bajau Laut and Murut, the new Kota Kinabalu High Court Complex was built to mirror its representation of individuality, as well as national recognition. It celebrates local heritage by incorporating Sabah’s official flower of Rafflesia and the national flower, the Hibiscus.
The building of justice is a six-storey building that houses three High Courts, six Magistrate’s Courts, six Session Courts, three High Courts and a Federal Court. The new complex replaces the previous building located in downtown Kota Kinabalu which is well known for its congestion.
Sustainability was a requirement when constructing the building as the directive was to minimize impact on the environment. In addition, it had presented difficulties in the form of area limitation and storage on construction. This was resolved with the use of LYSAGHT® KLIP-LOK OPTIMA™ & SMARTRUSS® truss system.
LYSAGHT® KLIP-LOK OPTIMA™ was available for onsite rollforming direct to roof and could be installed immediately, successfully reducing the site space required for storage.
Thanks to the SMARTRUSS® truss system, which was lightweight, easy to assemble and quick to erect, it was able to be engineered to fit client specifications and manufactured to exact standards, enabling quick installation.
Furthermore, LYSAGHT® products are manufactured from BlueScope’s premium steel materials, which are not only superior in strength and performance, but also contains recycled content and is 100% recyclable, which fits perfectly into its goal of being sustainable.
With the help of LYSAGHT®, the Kota Kinabalu High Court Complex was able to attain a culturally aesthetic rooftop that is both environmentally sustainable and durable.
The highlight of the building’s design is the promenade’s V-shaped roof which promoted natural ventilation for energy-efficiency and at the same time, capable of deflecting direct sunlight.
One of the landmark developments that is included in SCORE’s (Sarawak Corridor of Renewable Energy) blueprint for infrastructure, industrial and socio-economic development, pushing Mukah towards being a ‘smart city’.
With a rich architectural culture that celebrates skilled craftmanship with intricate design, it was only natural that the building should reflect its heritage.
